What is a self-ligating bracket?
A Self-ligating bracket SLB is a two-piece bracket system that incorporates a built-in clip to hold the orthodontic wire in place during treatment. Unlike traditional brackets, SLB does not require to use an elastic rubber band or a steel tie to hold the wire in place.
What are the advantages of self-ligating brackets over traditional brackets?
- Faster tooth movement during initial leveling stage, and
- Less friction between the wire and bracket during initial leveling stages, and
- More hygienic as SLB does not require an elastic to hold the wire, thus less bacteria accumulation REF .
- Minimizing the possibility of getting root resorption in patients with short roots REF.
- Self-ligating brackets are less painful when used with the right wire. We recommend the use of our limber Copper-NiTi wires to deliver forces lass than 100gm.

What are the disadvatages of a self ligating brackets?
- Traditional brackets present better troque expression compared to self ligating brackets. However, when comparing passive vs active self-ligating brackets, there was a very minimal difference REF.
- Self ligating brackets are little bit thicker to accomdate the size fo the clip. However, newer ALB are not much thicker making them barey noticable to the patients.
Passive vs active self-ligating bracket
There are two types of self-ligating brackets; Active and Passive.
The Damon bracket is considered a passive one while the speed® bracket is considered an active one.
IOS pioneered the concept of combining both concepts into one hybrid bracket system where the bracket can act both as active and as passive based on the wire size. At initial stages where the wire is recommended to be loose with light forces, the system will act as a passive bracket. As the wire size progress, the clip will put pressure on the wire thus changing the bracket into an active bracket.
Research has shown that when using a stainless stell wire, the type of SLB - either active or passive- does not affect the rate or type of tooth movement during its retraction in the orthodontic extraction cases, and the anchorage loss of the upper molars was nearly the same in both type REF. However, when using nickel-titanium and beta-titanium wires for guided tooth movement, passive SLB can minimize frictional resistance. This is why it is impoertant to have the passice effect of the clip during initial leveling with the Niti wire.

- The smart clip is made of NiTi to help retain its shape. Additionally, The NiTi clip will produce less friction with the NiTi wire. Maria et al has demonstrated that “even at different angulations, the self-ligating brackets showed significantly lower friction force values than the conventional brackets" REF. Combined with nickel-titanium wires, the self-ligating brackets exhibit much lower friction, possibly due to the contact between nickel-titanium clips and wires of the same material REF.”
- In contrast to the Damon bracket, the Pactive bracket might be converted to a regular bracket by removing the clip. The small hole in the face of the clip could be used to tweak the clip off the slot and then removing it using a weingart plier. Thus allowing the bracket to receive a regular elastic tie or a steel tie.

How to open Pactive self-ligating bracket?
The smart clip has two mechanism to open the clip; from the face or from the base.
- The Pactive smart clip has a small hole in the surface. By using an explorer “ IOS 18-870”, apply a gentle force to the occlusal direction with a slight tweak, or
- You can use the special tip on “IOS 18-877” and apply and occlusal pressure to the base of the clip. This technique is safer for the clip integrity, but might be harder if the patient has puffy gums or food accumulation

Is orthodontic treatment time shorter with self-ligating brackets?
Early clinical studies on treatment efficiency found a mean reduction of 4 to 6 months in treatment time and four visits during active treatment. However, later prospective studies found no difference between the two bracket types. Another prospective trial comparing SLB and conventional metal brackets found no significant difference in severely crowded cases but a small difference in favor of the SLB bracket in the moderately crowded cases
